More money misspent. Isn't there a plan for demo and securing closed schools? Look at all theRead More material left in the closed building. Could this be a political act to embarrass the never camera shy Rsmsey and his political aspirations in Rickmond?

Lets see: Its a Political Year, The renaming of Portola stinks to high heaven of Politics and theRead More biggest Politician of all, Charles Ramsey is at the middle of it all... And everybody else is just a bystander watching the crash in slo-motion...

The bystanders can only report what they saw. It was a horrific crash which we saw in slow-motion.Read More We can only report what we saw and heard. Does the means justify the end?

For me, Ramsey can't be gone soon enough. It's his handling of this that was the problem. HeRead More displayed a complete lack of sensitivity with his comment that "people will always find fault with the process." So don't even try? He never made any attempt to provide a neutral process. To Mr. Ramsey, I say don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I was there. Thanks for the update. Too bad that the board didn' t just unilaterally change theRead More name. The process was highly suspicious and prejudicial. Why waste the time of the people who wanted to retain the name and have Mr. Korematsu on the lips of each of the renaming committees' lips all the time. There should have been a citizens committee and not two proponents (Ramsey and Ghidella) on the committee. Where was the Portola Latino-Spanish speaking PTSA. Did they know what was going on? Had they been informed? Or did they think,"What't the use". This country is based on justice and equality for all. We did not see this as part of this process.

The new Hercules High Principal, Dr. Mansingh, published the following book about charter schoolsRead More which I would like to read, but it cost $100.00 (paperback). http://www.amazon.com/Area-Districts-Response-Charter-Schools/dp/3659115460

We have to make people aware that our State is run by public employee Unions and we need court casesRead More like today which ruled that the California Teacher Tenure rules are unconstitutional so that we can change laws and vote people out of office who do not represent the interests of the public who pay the taxes.

Something that is interesting to note is that high school grads are going to four year universitiesRead More and studying subject that isn't marketable. While on the other hand you have people getting vocational training at vocational schools that essentially guarantees them a job out of school that will make them 'x' amount of money. So it isn't that college degrees are worthless, some are. It is also said that sometimes trade school is the right choice! Makes sense. As long as we keep eroding and buffering the standards , our Politicians and SchoolRead More Boards will one day have a 100% Graduation Certificate to hang on their "I Love Me" walls!! Truth is , we as a nation spend more money per student than any other Nation in the world on primary education only to have our "graduates" rank 14th in the world......right behind Iceland. So before we run around the building and shake hands with ourselves, maybe we should take a moment to ponder some new innovations in education and stop throwing money into an endless pit!

Unfortunately, Susan, there are far too many otherwise intelligent people who believe nonsense aboutRead More vaccinations and find loopholes. It would seem that it will take many deaths from preventable diseases before people wake up to the danger posed by pseudoscientific clap-trap peddled by celebrity know-nothings like Jenny "University of Google" McCarthy.

And of course the real tragedy is that they are putting those who are most venerable, theRead More immunocompromised and the very young at the greatest risk. Sometimes ignorance and superstition is relatively harmless, but in this case it is downright dangerous.

Whats this tranny did is a crime and he/she/it needs to be punished in the courts and sent toRead More juvenile prison. That person created histeria anger and the hatred to many peoples. They is lucky that he/she/it did not actualy name any body as the people who did the attacks. this 15 year old waisted the time, moneies and valuable resources of the school and police to gets the attention. They should not be rewarded or excused for that behavior but should be punished to the fullest extents of the law.

JSanders... why don't you explain what you think "Destined for Greatness" means to you? IfRead More you have watched the news and seen the interviews with many of his fellow students and coaches, it seems as though this young man had an upbeat and inspiring personality that affected those around him in a positive way. In my book that is greatness. To be a person who brings out the best in others is truly rare. I imagine my definition of greatness is likely different than yours, simply because there is not much that I have ever agreed with you when I see your postings on this site. The negative comments that I read sadden me, and even more so the number of recommendations following those comments. It says a lot about the negativity either of this community or the followers on this website. Pearson Lyverse gave a personal perspective which I certainly appreciated, why do you need to refer to it as a "rant." It is simply disrespectful. The REAL topic here is a life lost too soon.

Parents build your children, so that they will not find it necessary to have the approval of theirRead More peers. If being like other children is not important to them, they will find it easier to say no when they are supposed to say no. Children are incapable of solving the problem because it’s about power, and each time a bully picks on someone, the bully’s power is enforced.Victims of bullying spare themselves distress, by detachment; denying their ability to experience happiness. For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. Keep safe bring protection with you check this out at http://bit.ly/1nctEuL.

Thanks for the article, Alex. Recently, the SF Chron ran an article on "Parents and SchoolRead More Participation" found here <http://www.sfgate.com/education/article/California-parents-on-school-participation-5036766.php>. The article mentions that parents want to help, but that schools need to be more accommodating to the parents work schedules. I experienced that first hand with our School Site Council. A teacher seemed annoyed that parents couldn't attend a monthly 2:00 or 3:00 meeting. Gee whiz, that teacher is getting paid for a full day's work. When we attend these meetings, we are using our vacation time or are losing pay because we have to leave our jobs to attend these meetings. I couldn't believe this teacher found it a hardship to attend a 4:00 or 5:00 meeting. We pay her salary for crying out loud! Some schools offer their Site Council Meetings in the evening. I ask teachers to remember what it is like to be a parent. I have to miss work when my daughter is sick or for school minimum days and holidays. My supervisor and co-workers also have children and all of us are in situations where both parents work. We all are fighting for the same time off on our work calendar. It's totally nuts. If the public schools cannot accommodate parents, then I will be more likely to support charter and private schools. I know some parents who have this time. They have a spouse who is making a good penny or they have a very flexible work schedule. Our public schools need to get on board with the modern family unit where both parents have less and less time to hang out at their child's school.

They have a spouse who is making a good buck or they have a very flexible work schedule. In some instances, you have one parent who is working on an H1b visa, which requires that their spouse not work, so you have one parent who can attend all school meetings. Most families do not fall into this category. Our public schools need to get on board with the modern family unit where both parents have less and less time to hang out at their child's school.

The words of Jewlyes Gutierrez, a 16-year-old sophomore at Hercules High, and recent victim ofRead More bullying says "When you report something, it should be investigated and something should be done," Gutierrez said. "Putting them back in class doesn't really do anything."
