What a horrible, avoidable tragedy! I hope the driver and "parents" are held accountable.Read More I hate when I see overly aggressive drivers with kids in the car. Hopefully someone learns something from this.

"The driver, a 30-year-old San Pablo woman, was the only occupant of the SUV who was buckledRead More up" I hope the Driver (parent?) is going to face manslaughter charges for this???

I have one. Bought it online and installed it myself. Not sure it will totally deter theft but IRead More feel it will give pause.

I was thinking about getting a lock on my mailbox. Too much mail theft out there. I hear thievesRead More are even following UPS and Fed Ex trucks around and stealing packages from porches. Does anybody have a lock on their mailbox in Hercules? What do I have to do to get a lock on my mailbox? Do I have to go through the post office?

Evidently. no one has a problem with my logic or my position on defending either myself, my familyRead More or my property when I am away from home. Therefore, I have a question, why can’t I get a permit to carry, legally? My local Police Department and my local Sheriff’s Department will not issue a permit for these reasons. Why Not? Reading the paper and watching TV, there are several people ready to use a gun in the act of committing a crime, but the citizens are denied the privilege of legally defending themselves. Is there something wrong with this picture? I think there is!

So, whose job is it to protect me, to protect my family and to protect my property? The courts sayRead More it’s my responsibility. The law enforcement community allows me to protect myself while on my own property, but the instant that I move off of my own property, I can no longer protect myself, my family or my property. Consider that I drive my car to the local supermarket or shopping center and some individual decides he/she wants my car, my wallet, my cell phone or my credit card. Chances are that there is no law enforcement individuals right there on that spot ready to protect me and my family and my property? Chances are that they will be more than happy to file a police report after the event has taken place, but “If” I was able to protect myself with my gun, I would be the one in trouble. This is diametrically opposed to our “Second Amendment,” and I wonder who made these decisions? Why is it that criminals can carry a gun with no chance of being searched, frisked, profiled as the perp, or apprehended, but if I elect protect myself, I have to face the law and the court system. Does anyone else see any problem with this logic? Where have we gone wrong?

If we could only set bear traps under our rugs or any other such trap or device to dissuade theseRead More incorrigible thieves. It appears to be the "usual suspects".

Patty, You sort of have it backwards. A UUTax does not cover everyone as well as a parcel tax.Read More Everyone that lives in Hercules, lives, well....., in Hercules. If they rent then their rent will soon go up because landlords will need to cover the new tax burden incurred by a parcel tax. On the other hand there are many uneven applications of UUTaxes. For example if you use a satellite dish instead of cable you will not incur a UUTax for that service. Cable will be taxed but not satellite. The cable portion of the UUTax will undoubtedly be the largest single source of new UUTax revenue as it will be a full 8% increase instead of a 2% increase. If you use a cell phone provided by your business and it is not billed in Hercules you don't pay the additional UUT on them. Many sales and service folks and business owners have this advantage. If the tax passes I plan to switch to Direct TV. I also plan to drop my home phone to save that tax. Unfortunately there is little I can do about electric and gas. But I may add solar to reduce that cost and that tax. So, there are many variables to the UUTax. It does not spread the tax out as evenly as a parcel tax would. The most important part is what Susan stated. The Measure A tax is NOT for the police department it is for the GENERAL FUND, even if you want it to be otherwise.
Patty O'Day April 25, 2013 at 04:05 pm
With a parcel tax, I believe only the homeowners would have to pay the tax. I believe the taxRead More should be spread to ALL residents.
Susan Scott April 25, 2013 at 03:26 pm
I agree with Susan and Selina. The City General funds don't deserve the added funds Measure A wouldRead More potentially gift them. A parcel tax is the correct way to be certain the Police are supported as we Citizens of Hercules want.

RJ, Excuse me? If my simple query is "dumb ass", then your response is even more of theRead More same and serves no purpose. Classy.
Phil Simmons April 18, 2013 at 12:23 am
RJ, Anything to get a rise out of you.
RJ April 17, 2013 at 11:31 pm
I see the above twins are making their dumb ass comments again.

Crime is rampant, something must be done. Banning shoes would be a good start.
