Thanks for the review, Colby! I agree... this wasn't what I was expecting at all. I had braced…Read More myself for a boring-but-important political thriller, and this was much more entertaining. Although I still fell asleep and need to re-watch it...

To support local businesses. Seems to me that as Sal the Plumber, you might be a local business too.…Read More Our community needs us to support it! Or else it will go away.

I love bookstores and frequent them, but have such a large professional library and such a backlog…Read More of books to read that mostly the ones I buy are treasure hunted at thrift stores or garage sales because they had just come up in conversation or an article, and there they were. But I do buy books at bookstores for gifts, and occasionally buy new ones. I just really don't need anymore books right now. And that's a big shame, since I do really like frequenting and supporting LOCAL retailers.
I guess one good way around this is to buy gift certificates at local bookstores, and get other people going in to them.

Dancing is such a great way to get exercise and have fun at the same time. I never would have…Read More thought to observe a class first, but it makes perfect sense. And, so many people are intimidated by the idea of dancing that they miss this opportunity for fun.

I vote for "Night of the Hunter," with Robert Mitchum. At his very best, M. portrays a…Read More relentlessly sinister psychopath who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Worse, he is a faux evangelical, hell fire and brimstone spouting "pastor" in pursuit of two cute little kids with intent to do harm if necessary to snatch the little girl's tightly held money stuffed teddy bear.
I first viewed this masterfully shot, beautifully lit film as a 17 year old naive student at Berkeley, while babysitting alone in a dark, dingy apartment on Piedmont Avenue. Dang, it was effectively scary. Charles Laughton's first and only directorial film is a work of art on many levels, in my view.
I saw Mitchum once again, stalking clean cut attorney Gregory Peck and his photogenic, all-American family in another eerie fear fest, "Cape Fear," a couple nights ago on one of the cable movie channels.

Although I have not watched this movie in over 30 years, I remember it as being a real force of…Read More energy in my life and I saw it then four times. I was younger and related to it very well. I wonder if there are other movies which are similar or which it reminds you of....can anyone think of any? But, Harold and Maude really spoke to the energy and positivity in a person regardless of age, race, class, orientation or profession......atitude with a capital A.

Colby,
This is one of my favorite movies, ever:
The mom routinely swimming past Harold's floating…Read More body.
Harold excusing himself from the blind date his mom set up for him, to
ceremonially pour gas on himself and light-up in front of her, to "discretely"
drive her away.
The preacher's repulsion at the thought of Harold's "young, firm" body in bed with
Maude.
Priceless... I love Ruth Gordon. She's fearless.
And, the views of rolling hills and oaks lets you know it was filmed here.
About 35 years ago, Harold and Maude was a recurring feature -- along with Rocky Horror -- at the El Rey on Main St. That's where I first saw it.
Thanks for sharing. You're right, it's timeless.

Exactly, and this is why Avatar didn't blow my mind. Yes, the 3D technology used in filming was…Read More pretty awesome, but the story-line wasn't anything special. Especially because I think Dances with Wolves was way better.
The political aspect of awards shows like the Golden Globes, and the Oscars is usually what drives me to avoid them. I don't care what an actor or actress has to say about politics, and I hate when they use their acceptance speech as a soap box. Last night's Golden Globes didn't bother me as much as I thought (Probably because I had it on my DVR so I could fast forward through whatever I wanted) but I do understand what you are talking about when it comes to political influence within Hollywood.

Jim, You make some great choices. The Beatles, musically are still the Giants of Modern Music. I…Read More believe that music is the Universal language (not Esperanto!) and that "Music is the Message". The Beatles are a Large part of why the Sixties and Seventies were a turning point in America and elsewhere. They unified so many people and gave rise to a conciousness that is somewhat lacking today. Can anyone listen to just one Beatle song? Its hard to do. The Beatles explored new musical territories and took us along with them...

When I was a copyboy at the Oakland Tribune in... well, back in the day, let's say, one of our…Read More young, very talented reporters (Ann Bancroft) went undercover and joined the Moonies, a scary cult that was, at the time, recruiting young, innocent and vulnerable young people. Ann was brilliant and strong, but their mind control techniques were such that she didn't want to leave after a couple of weeks. We had to send in another reporter to rescue her. Her subsequent stories helped reveal Sun Young Moon's "organization" to be avoiding federal income tax, and unearthed his powerful mind control techniques for the world to see. This movie sounds similar to that.
