49ers Fans Voice Their Disappointment

The Niners made a big comeback in the second half, but it wasn't enough to take home the trophy.

The Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl XLVII 34-31 Sunday.

A power outage at the Superdome in New Orleans interrupted the game for 35 minutes, with the 49ers trailing the Baltimore Ravens 28-6. When the power came back on, the 49ers cut the Ravens' lead to 34-31, making a big comeback.

In the end, however, the Ravens pulled off a win.

How do you think the 49ers played? Give us your thoughts on the 49ers' loss in the comments below.

2 turnovers, TD kickoff return allowed, pressure on Flacco but let him escape more than acceptable. Weakness is covering medium-long pass, and without urgency, QB can wait for receiver to get real open. Nice comeback, but was thinking Colin, even if focus of D, would be able to follow blocking into end zone. Jim Harbaugh & staff deserve kudos for 2nd year accomplishments, not amateur 2nd guessing.
Go 9ers!

I think the Patch editors need to learn the definition of "breaking news" as it pertains to Patch's goal of being a hyperlocal news source. If it does not affect the safety/health of Redwood City & Woodside residents/businesses, and does not have anything to do with an immediate severe weather or traffic issue, it does not need to be sent out as an urgent "breaking news alert." I've seen this alert used for way too many things that it shouldn't be, and I'm unsubscribing from it because it's a waste of my time to check on something that couldn't possibly have an effect on this area.
Now, if someone reports rioting or fires or general mayhem in downtown Redwood City or a neighboring Peninsula town because of the Niners' loss -- THAT is alert-worthy breaking news.
Danny De February 4, 2013 at 03:23 am
49ers losing is breaking news. I felt they were going to win this game. In fact, most analysts picked San Fran. But the professional gamblers had it right, with the majority of them taking Baltimore. Niners are young and have a bright future. The one thing that does scare me is that the Seahawks and Rams are getting better too and they are all in the same division.

Look, I know that you have to be good enough to beat the other team and any mistakes by the refs BUT...
I figured the bad calls in the first half would be evened out. Didn't happen. Pass interference in the end zone = first and goal from the one. Holding on the punt/safety = enough time to fair catch the kick, run a play, call timeout and maybe kick the tying field goal. Just sayin'.

At least they made it to the superbowl. : )
John Magee February 4, 2013 at 07:43 am
After the refs watching the niners all game with magnifying glasses and calling them on every close call, for some reason they couldn't see the Ravens defender with both arms wrapped around Crabtree in the end zone on our last offensive drive. This after watching the ravens (who pride themselves on being "thugs") not get called on any thing till the 3rd quarter. That whole game they were late hitting, helmet stripping, starting fights and when they did get flagged, the refs conveniently found a Niner infraction to nullify it. You could say I'm a little mad about it. And then watch the retiring murderer thank the Lord for his bounty. He should be thanking those refs.

They definately deserve props for making it to the SB and for the ferocious comeback that fell just a little short. At the same time getting behind 28-6 early in the third quarter is just too much to overcome in a Super Bowl. They just looked out of sorts or something until the power outage. Had the Niners played with that same intensity throughout the game - and had they not self-destructed in certain sports - they would be 6 for 6 in Super Bowl games.
Eat Crow February 4, 2013 at 12:05 pm
I get some people complaining about the refs. However, the fact is the Ravens played a complete game. The 49ers decided to show-up early in the third quarter. By then, unfortunately, it was too little, too late.

It is breaking news, especially for a Patch reader like me who doesn't like football and would never sit and watch the game, but was happy to get the alert (while I was out on the trail on my nightly run) from my local Patch (as opposed to some other outside media source) so I knew who won and was suddenly "in the know" without having to ask anyone or look something up later. And now I can go back and read what my crazy neighbors all over the Peninsula have to say about the game. I still don't think I'll ever get into football ... this is nuts ... although it is sad they lost.

"...and NY Giants fans express their happiness."
Tough luck. Maybe you will get a good coaching effort from Harbaugh next time, if there is one. He is a complete tool and his game plan fell way short. Did not establish Gore early enough, another failure to get solid looks at wide receivers (not counting Davis, who should have had 200 yards himself). Complaining about the referees is just comical. But I guess they did also miss 5 or 6 holding calls on the 49ers during the failed comeback. The futility of the last 18 years continues.
Steve Hayes February 4, 2013 at 12:56 pm
Should not blame the ref when you fail on four plays from the 8 yard line - none of the four plays looked like very high percentage plays. I think they got a little distracted by trying to run a little time off the clock.
Chris Werdebaugh February 4, 2013 at 01:22 pm
Absolutely agree...whining about refs is ridiculous. Thats just trying to find an excuse for the loss. The Niners had no game in the first half, simple as that. Playing catch-up might be dramatic to watch but is very difficult to execute as a team. The refs let the guys play football. If you want to make yourself feel better, rewind the DVR and watch how much holding the Niners O Line was doing to the Ravens D. It was amazing they were not getting calls. But the refs stayed true to their "Not" calling the whole game which ends up making it fair. I thought it was an awesome superbowl. :)
Chris Werdebaugh February 4, 2013 at 01:31 pm
Jim, its easy to think "your" team got bad calls. Especially, when your only looking for bad calls that might impede "your" teams progress at a win. However, watching this game from the perspective of not being a fan of either team. I witnessed many "No Calls" on Niner holds, leading with the head, etc. So relax, it was a good game. Be happy your favorite team has a good young quarterback that helped bring the team to New Orleans.
Troy February 4, 2013 at 01:36 pm
Should have got the holding call on Crabtree but the pass was overthrown....maybe that's why the refs didn't call it? ----exiting game with good food though

Camaro on Cinderblocks February 4, 2013 at 02:15 pm
I Holding on the punt/safety....You do realize that if they threw the yellow flags for the holding it wouldn't matter because the clock doesn't stop the second the holding is called. You get the same safety and the same time off the clock.
Ask Roddy White and and Falcons about pass interference in the end zone...
Mark February 4, 2013 at 02:28 pm
Congratulations to the Niners as a team. As a lifelong Niner's fan, from the 50's, it was a tough loss. Couldn't ask more from the players, they hung it all out. My only caveat is that Jim Harbaugh has been outcoached a number of times this year and this game is one of them. Scoring from inside the 10 has been problematic and the offensive coordinator Roman needs to find other employment. He is too clever by half and chokes when under pressure as he did in the last 4 minutes of the game.
Need a shutdown corner and the sky is the limit. Can't wait until next year.

John Harbaugh: Jim will have 49ers 'roaring back very soon'

Jim C,
I was surprised that the TV commentators didn't make any mention (that I heard) about this holding. It was clear to me. It prevented an earlier tackle of the runner/holder by about 4 seconds. And Jim Harbough didn't seem to notice or call the refs over to stink about it (to make the upstairs ref box have to think about and review it). I WONDER WHAT THE REAL RULES EFFECT OF CALLING THE HOLDING WOULD HAVE BEEN? Here's what I think. If someone knows more accurately, enlighten us. If the 49ers declined, then the same end result. If 49ers had accepted, then it would be a 5 yard loss (or half distance to goal) and a replay of the 4th down. This time the replay would be (1) with the 49er players looking for the safety and possibly less time off of the clock or (2) a kick with more squeeze and possibilities of errors and less kicking distance. It would have been nice to see that played out, although little chance of 49ers winning. The real question is how would the TIMING have worked? ,,,,
P February 4, 2013 at 08:43 pm
The real question is how would the TIMING have worked?
Would the clock be stopped at the time of the penalty occurance (the hold) or back at the time of the hike or not turned back at all? Would the clock start again when the ball was hiked for the replay of the 4th down? The Ravens could then either do the Safety again or do the kick. It would have been interesting to see one last 49er pass to the end zone or an Ackers kick! (There was no talk about this at the time, but maybe these details were discussed in the post-game show. But I turned off and tuned out.)
P February 4, 2013 at 08:45 pm
It's is VERY hard to get into the Super Bowl in the first place.
So the idea that the 49ers are going to definitely get back there next year is wishful thinking at this point. It's unlikely, but I hope they do!
Palomar Parkman February 5, 2013 at 12:39 pm
The game was very entertaining for fans of both teams. That is why you watch. The 49ers played like a young team. Flashes of brilliance and moments of stupidity. The non-calls by the refs changed the ebb and flow. Their performance was pathetic and that is supposed to be the 'best' ref crew the NFL has to offer. Bad calls and non-calls never even out. I expect to see the game played by the rules.
I am not sure what the ultimate outcome would have been if it was properly officiated but it most definitely would not have been the same game I watched. What a disgraceful display by the NFL on their biggest stage.
P February 5, 2013 at 03:55 pm
Palomar,
Well said comment! There should have been an early pass-interference call on the 49ers as well. If the refs had been making calls in the early game, players would have had to play by the rules throughout. Instead they let there be numerous late whistles and late hits (where one guy had the runner stopped with a tackle and then other guys were allowed to hit him--very physically dangerous and with game-changing possibilities of injuries and fumbles) and also over aggressive shoving/fighting after the point (mostly started by the Ravens). I thought the officiating was poor and changed the nature of the game. Wasn't this almost the fewest penalty calls that these teams have EVER had? (I'd like to hear those statistics.) Did these teams change that much from their previous season play that they now weren't doing penalties? I doubt it.
