WCCUSD Will Continue Adult Ed Program

The West Contra Costa Unified School District will maintain funding for adult education — especially English language instruction — at about the current level during the next fiscal year.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District will maintain its adult education program next year at about the current level of funding, according to an article in the Contra Costa Times

The district's school board voted to keep the current program largely intact at its Wednesday night meeting.

The adult ed budget for fiscal year 2013-14 will be about $1.5 million, roughly the amount budgeted this year but less than half what the district spent on adult education programs before California's economic downturn decimated state funding for education.

The program will continue to focus on English as a second language training for adults. Advocates for the program cited its value in letting parents help their children with schoolwork in English, the Times article said.

The additional $1.5 to $2 million that the district used to spend on adult education has been redirected into the WCCUSD general fund. That's possible because since fiscal year 2008-09, the state has given local school districts more flexibility in spending funds earmarked for certain programs, such as adult ed, the Times reported.
