Wastewater Authority Meets Wednesday

Joint meeting with Hercules and Pinole officials back on track.

Pinole and Hercules officials are scheduled on Wednesday  to discuss the permitting process for their joint wastewater treatment plant and recruiting a manager for the plant.

The Water Pollution Control Plant   also will receive an oral report about ongoing discussions with the Regional Water Quality Control Board.

Hercules has been considering separating itself from Pinole in operations of the plant, which needs to be expanded to accommodate anticipated development growth in Hercules. Under the alternative, Hercules would send its wastewater to the West County Wastewater District's plant in Richmond. That would involve large investments in purchasing right of way to lay pipes that would deliver the water either along San Pablo Avenue or along the shoreline. Although environmental assessment for that project has begun, the Hercules City Council hasn't yet approved it.

Regardless of the status of that project, the Pinole wastewater plant must submit an application to renew its permit from state and federal regulators by the end of the year.

Council members Don Kuehne and Myrna De Vera represent Hercules on the authority. Pinole's representatives are council members Debbie Long and Tim Banuelos.
