Three Candidates Will Run for Two Pinole City Council Seats

Filing deadline ends with Ivette Ricco joining incumbents Pete Murray and Roy Swearingen in a three-way contest.

Pinole voters will decide among two sitting city council members and one challenger in the Nov. 6 election, as the candidate filing period ended on Thursday.

Current Mayor and submitted filing papers and the required fee to run for city council on Thursday. Incumbent Roy Swearingen on Aug. 2.

Ricco is the former Pinole Chamber of Commerce President. Sheila Grist, who had taken out papers last month, chose not to run.

Had either incumbent declined to submit nomination papers, the filing period for candidates would have been extended until Aug. 17.

Pinole City Treasurer Judy Lee will run unopposed for re-election, as no resident filed to run against her.

The November ballot also will ask voters to renew an 8 percent utility tax that is due to expire at the end of 2012. Revenue collected from the tax represents about 20 percent of the city's 10.4 million general fund budget. If approved, the renewal would last until 2020. Currently the tax is added to gas, electricity and telephone bills.
