Should Hercules Support Ban on Large-Capacity Magazines?

The Hercules City Council on Tuesday will consider whether to support a state bill that would ban the ownership of magazines capable of holding more than 10 bullets.

The always-controversial debate over large-capacity gun magazines is headed to Hercules Tuesday night.

The Hercules City Council will consider whether or not to support four bills by State Sen. Loni Hancock (D-Oakland). The bills deal with mattress recycling, air quality, job-reentry and large-capacity ammunition magazines.

Hancock, Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) and Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) have introduced SB 396, which would make it illegal to own a magazine that can hold more than 10 bullets.

It's already illegal to sell or give large-capacity magazines to others. Hancock's bill would mean anyone caught with a large-capacity magazine could go to a county jail for no more than one year. The new bill would also outlaw magazines that could hold more than 10 bullets but have been permanently modified so they can't.

In a press release, Hancock called the bill "a common sense reform to reduce gun violence in California."

A message posted on CalGuns.net, a gun-enthusiast message board, encouraged gun owners to attend Tuesday's Hercules City Council meeting.

"We are asking all Hercules residents and gun enthusiasts from the local area to attend this meeting and voice their opposition to this action," the posting read. "The City Council Members should not be injecting themselves into state politics, and the state government should not be infringing on our 2nd Amendment rights."
