Pinole City Council Scheduled To Vote On Cell Phone Tower

The 78-foot-tall Verizon tower is on Tuesday night's council agenda

The Pinole City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday night on the long-debated cell phone tower planned for Pinole Valley Park.

The council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Pinole City Hall, 2131 Pear St. A closed-door session begins at 5:30 p.m. where the tower will be one of the items discussed.

The 78-foot proposed Verizon Wireless tower would be located in the eastern sector of the park.

The city would receive $26,400 the first year of the tower's operation with the payments increasing 2 percent every year, according to a story in the Contra Costa Times.

Verizon officials have reportedly agreed to disguise the tower as a tree, construct a chain-link fence and put in landscaping.

There has been neighborhood opposition. Among them is Patch blogger Ivette Rico, who urged readers to voice their opposition to the tower in a blog she posted last week.

At the Tuesday night meeting, the council will also discuss implementing a grant to re-open Fire Station 74 in the valley.

They'll also discuss assessments for the city's landscaping and lighting district for this coming fiscal year.
