Multi-Story Safeway Store Could be Coming to Hercules

A company owned by Safeway is in talks to purchase about 12 acres of land in Hercules.

Land-use restrictions could bring a unique Safeway store to Hercules.

The Contra Costa Times reports that the Hercules City Council Tuesday night will consider giving more time to negotiators trying to work out a deal to sell the approximately 12-acre, city-owned Sycamore Crossing tract to a Safeway subsidiary.

"But because a deed restriction on all but about 3.2 acres of the tract rules out a grocery store, Safeway now plans to build a podium-style store with rooftop parking on the unrestricted portion, at the corner of Sycamore and San Pablo avenues, said City Manager Steve Duran," the Times reports.

The Times reports that a multi-story store will be more expensive to build, so the company is looking for a reduction in the purchase price of the land.

The Hercules City Council will discuss the item at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 111 Civic Drive.
