Kelly First to Pull Papers for Hercules City Council Race

Bill Kelly was the first resident to throw his hat in the ring for the November Hercules City Council election.

One Hercules City Council hopeful pulled his nomination papers Monday -- the first day of the filing period.

Resident Bill Kelly, an attorney and former San Francisco policeman, was the first to throw his hat in the ring for a seat on the council, City Clerk Doreen Mathews said.

Kelly recently to run in the November election. He will potentially face off against three incumbents -- the council's newest members -- Mayor Dan Romero, Councilman Gerard Boulanger and Councilman William Wilkins.

Outspoken waterfront development proponent Phil Simmons has also vocalized his plans to run but did not file on Monday, Mathews said.

Candidates must be registered voters living in Hercules. Completed nomination papers must be submitted by Friday, August 10, 2012. If an incumbent fails to submit a nomination petition for re-election, the deadline for submitting a nominations petition is extended an additional five calendar days, August 15, 2012, according to a city notice about the filing period.
