Hercules Voters Go To The Polls Tuesday To Decide On Utility User Tax Increase

Hercules voters will decide on Tuesday whether to increase the local tax that is currently on their utility bills.

Measure A would hike the utility user tax from 6 percent to 8 percent for the next five years. It would also add the 8 percent tax to cable television bills and other video technology.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Hercules is the only community in Contra Costa County that is voting on Tuesday. For more information on the special election, you can check the county elections department website.

Patch will report the election results on Tuesday night.

This past week, Hercules officials were criticized by some observers for what they described as vague, misleading language on Measure A on the ballot.

Last month, city officials drew up two budgets for next fiscal year. One is a $12.9 million version if Measure A is approved. The other is a $12.2 million plan if it doesn't.

The $12.2 million proposal calls for the disbanding of the Hercules Police Department. Under that scenario, the city would contract with the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department for law enforcement services.
