Hercules Council To Discuss New Budget At Tuesday Meeting

The Hercules City Council will be presented Tuesday evening with a 2013-2014 budget that is a bit more cheerful than it was a week ago.

The council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the council chambers at Hercules City Hall, 111 Civic Drive.

The council members will hear about a $12.9 million budget that has been buoyed by the passage last week of Measure A.

The ballot measure will increase the city's utility user tax from 6 percent to 8 percent. It'll also add that 8 percent levy to cable television bills and other video technology.

City officials said before the election that is Measure A had failed, they would have cut the budget to $12.2 million and possibly disbanded the city police force in favor of hiring the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department to provide law enforcement.

After the election, Mayor John Delgado told Patch the city still needs to cut $200,000 to balance the budget.

The council is scheduled to hold public hearings and adopt a final 2013-2014 budget during the final week of June. The new budget will take effect on July 1.
