New Communications System to Improve Emergency Response

Equipment will provide better coordination with other East Bay Area agencies.

The Pinole Police Department is ready to join an expansive communications network with other Bay Area agencies with new radios and technology for responding to emergencies.

Pinole Police Chief John Hardester said the equipment will allow better coordination among first responders in situations such as strong earthquakes.

"As part of its participation with the East Bay Regional Communications System Authority, the Pinole Police Department has moved forward with the lease-purchase of radios and with the significant preparations required for participation in the new communications system," according to a news release issued Friday.

Pinole is joining 38 other agencies in the authority, including Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, 30 cities, four special districts, the University of California, and the California Department of Transportation.

"Participation in the new system will enhance the Pinole Police Department’s ability to communicate with other first responders in the event of a major event, including planned events, and emergencies, and allow for communications interoperability across various first responder disciplines and jurisdictions," according to the release.

The Pinole Police Department is expected to join the communication network on April 16. The network eventually will include the city's public works and fire departments.

“The new system will have a significant, positive effect on the City of Pinole’s ability to serve the community in a time of need," the release quoted Pinole Mayor Pete Murray.

This system will give responders a "united and rapid response"  to such emergency events, Hardester said in the release.

"I also wish to commend our Police, Fire and Public Works Departments for their hard work and preparation to create this opportunity for our participation in the new regional system," Hardester said. "Their work will give us the ability to provide a full tactical response to local, regional and real world events, which in turn will make Pinole a much safer place to live.”
