Council to Discuss Electing City’s Top Finance Position

If the council meets Tuesday, Jan. 24.

The Hercules City Council will discuss the possibility of electing the city’s next finance director. In the past, the Hercules finance directors have been hired by the city manager. The only elected officials at city hall have been the city council.

The city attorney and city manager are selected by the council, all other city employees spots are ultimately controlled by the city manager.

Councilwoman Myrna De Vera introduced the idea, which would divert some of the city manager’s hiring and firing power to Hercules citizens.

While the city does not have the authority to make its finance director an elected official, it is able to make a city treasurer into an elected official.
