5 Things: Facebook, Tennis Partner and Helium

Also, all you could ever want to know about Hercules government meeting times this week.

Do you need a little pick-me-up? How about trying something new and filling a bunch of balloons with helium and seeing what that does for you? Failed experiment or not, crazy ideas like these were made possible by French astronomer Jules Janssen, who “discovered” the chemical element that makes balloons so much fun this week in 1868.

Onto a funny, high-pitched version of 5 Things…

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a little social media website called Facebook that has been gaining some steam. It went from a virtual place to connect with buddies to, practically, a requirement for many job seekers and friend keepers. If you’re still in the dark about what was once named “The Facebook,” it may be time to swing by the library on Monday at 7 p.m. for Beginning Facebook, a tutorial on the “ins and outs” of the site.

5 Things… once put out a call for Hercules searching for a local tennis partner. Well, we thought we’d switch things up a bit today: There is now—get this—a man who is looking for a tennis partner. He’s not a Herculean but wants to meet up at Hercules’ to play. Any takers?

There are plenty of ways to help out with local organizations in need of monetary donations or volunteers. If you’ve decided to put your dollars or time into preserving library hours and staff, you might want to note that the Hercules Emergency Library Program has a new website. Two things: Monday’s Planning Commission meeting has been cancelled. And, after being a few weeks without it, the Finance Sub- Committee and Citizens Finance Advisory Ad Hoc Committee Meeting is back for a meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.

Lastly, the city is still searching for a replacement for its current city attorney.  The City Attorney Ad Hoc group has made its recommendations for the position to the City Council but will continue to meet to discuss various issues that concern Hercules government. The group’s next meeting is on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
