A big-rig carrying a large shipment of frozen food to a local Trader Joe's store overturned along westbound Interstate Highway 80 in Pinole this morning, causing heavy traffic, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The CHP was notified of the incident around 3:45 a.m. on westbound I-80 east of Pinole Valley Road, Officer John Fransen said. The far right lane of westbound I-80 was still blocked as of 8:45 a.m. as emergency crews worked to remove the frozen food from the truck to lighten the load before towing the big-rig from the scene, he said.

The driver told the CHP that he lost control when another vehicle swerved into his lane, causing the truck to go up an embankment, Fransen said. In the process, the truck struck an abandoned vehicle, he said. The crews working to remove the big-rig, which is on its side, are also trying to prevent diesel from spilling out of the truck to avoid a hazardous materials situation, Fransen said.

The scene is expected to be cleared by 10:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m., he said. No injuries were reported.
