Police Warn Residents About Vehicle Burglaries After Man's Car Window Smashed While he Was in Starbucks

Police offer tips to help protect residents from being victimized.

Police in Hercules are reminding residents to secure their vehicles against potential burglars after a man's car was burglarized when he stopped for coffee early Monday morning.

An officer responded around 6:45 a.m. to a reported auto burglary in a strip mall parking lot at 3600 San Pablo Ave., according to police. Police said the victim reported he parked his Fiat 500 and went into a Starbucks to buy coffee, then returned five minutes later to find his car's rear window smashed in and a backpack containing personal documents gone.

There was no sign of the suspect in the area when the officer arrived on scene and no suspect description was available. Police said the incident is a reminder of the steps people can take to prevent vehicle burglaries. Drivers and passengers are reminded to stow away anything of value and make sure no objects are visible from the outside of the vehicle.

Police also advised people to park inside a garage or other indoor secured parking area whenever possible and to always roll up windows and lock all doors. Those parking in a public space should leave their vehicle in a high-visibility area if possible.

Anyone with information about the Monday morning vehicle break-in or similar crimes is asked to call Hercules police at (510) 724-1111.
