A Contra Costa County coroner's deputy identified the pedestrian as 25-year-old Diego Garcia of Pinole.

Police said Garcia was struck and killed while walking on a sidewalk on Appian Way near Marlesta Road at about 6:10 p.m. Thursday.

A 32-year-old El Sobrante woman was driving north on Appian Way when she lost control of her car and crashed head-on into a car in a southbound lane, according to police.

Police said after the collision, the woman drove across Appian Way and onto a sidewalk, where she struck Garcia.

Garcia succumbed to his injuries in an ambulance headed to a nearby hospital, according to police.

The driver who struck him was taken to a hospital to be treated for her injuries and remained hospitalized this morning.

Police said investigators believe the woman was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision and has been arrested.

Her name has not yet been released.

The driver of the car struck head-on by the woman complained of pain after the crash and was released, police said.

The collision remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call Pinole police at (510) 724-8950.
