A Contra Costa County coroner's deputy identified the pedestrian as 25-year-old Diego Garcia of Pinole.

Police said Garcia was struck and killed while walking on a sidewalk on Appian Way near Marlesta Road at about 6:10 p.m. Thursday.

A 32-year-old El Sobrante woman was driving north on Appian Way when she lost control of her car and crashed head-on into a car in a southbound lane, according to police.

Police said after the collision, the woman drove across Appian Way and onto a sidewalk, where she struck Garcia.

Garcia succumbed to his injuries in an ambulance headed to a nearby hospital, according to police.

The driver who struck him was taken to a hospital to be treated for her injuries and remained hospitalized this morning.

Police said investigators believe the woman was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision and has been arrested.

Her name has not yet been released.

The driver of the car struck head-on by the woman complained of pain after the crash and was released, police said.

The collision remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call Pinole police at (510) 724-8950.

Is there a follow up article naming the drunk driver who caused this innocent man's death? This is so tragic and His Death, SO very unnecessary. Who gets plastered on a Thursday evening by 6pm, and gets behind the wheel, on a hazy stormy evening (one of the first in months)... road slippery with fresh rain, mixed with oil. Seeing as it was a head on collision, I suppose it could have been worse.. but so sad, as this innocent man was not behind the wheel or even a passenger in either car.. probably just walking home from work or to the grocery store, to pick up a few things.. It is these types of tragedies, that make me so very angry. Road conditions were such, that this could have happened to any one of us SOBER.. it just frustrates me that alcohol probably was key in this being worse than what it had to be..

On Thursday February 6, 2014 Diego Agustin Garcia went out for his athletic daily run where at around 6pm, he was tragically struck by a vehicle collision caused by a drunk driver. Police on the scene reported that this particular young man was a great fighter. He showed an immense will to live and tried many times to shake off his injuries. On his way to the hospital Diego succumbed to his battle and although he just stepped out for a run, Diego never made it home again. He was just 25 years old. Diego was the ultimate Oakland A's Fan. He was a quiet young man dedicated to his studies and upcoming career but he undoubtedly lived for the A's. In order to honor Diego, his family, and all families who have become victims to drunk drivers and whose lives will never again be the same, we ask that the Oakland Athletics in association with MLB commemorate Diego and others like him by sharing his story and allowing his younger brother and best friend, Marcos Garcia, to participate in this seasons first home game and allowing him the ultimate honor of throwing the first pitch. Family and friends please spread the word, email necessary organizations and share his story. Together we can stop drunk driving.
