Motive Still Unclear in Hardware Store Stabbing; Victim Identified As Pinole Man

Hercules man is in county jail on $1 million bail, accused of stabbing to death the employee

Authorities are still trying to figure out why an employee at an El Sobrante hardware store was stabbed to death on Sunday morning.

On Monday, Contra Costa County Sheriff investigators identified the employee as 51-year-old Daniel Stone of Pinole.

Daymond Agnew, a 34-year-old Hercules man, was arrested in connection with the stabbing death. He is in Contra Costa County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.

Investigators say sheriff's deputies got a call at 9 a.m. Sunday about a robbery in progress at Oliver's Ace Hardware on San Pablo Dam Road.

When they arrived, they found Stone in the parking lot, suffering from two stab wounds to the chest. He was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where he was later pronounced dead.

Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said Stone and Agnew didn't know each other and hadn't had any previous contact.

He said detectives have interviewed Agnew, but they still haven't determined what prompted the stabbing.
