Man Testifies He Killed Friend in Pinole in Self-Defense

Brian Fitch is charged with killing a high school friend; he says it was in self-defense, while prosecutors say it was motivated by jealousy.

A Fairfield man testified that he killed a friend in self-defense in 2011 after he confronted the man about allegedly sleeping with his wife.

The Contra Costa Times reports that 43-year-old Brian Fitch shot and killed Jeff McCoy, a Pinole Valley High School friend, after they argued about Fitch's wife.

The Times reports Fitch argued with his wife, drove to Pinole to speak with McCoy, and snorted a line of cocaine. The pair reportedly drove to Richmond to try to find heroin for McCoy, but turned back when they hit traffic:

As the pair drove to the crest of a hill in a residential neighborhood, Fitch said he confronted McCoy about his wife, and McCoy responded: "What are you gonna do about it?" He said McCoy then pointed one of his handguns at him, before Fitch pulled his other gun from his waistband as he drove and shot McCoy.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, reportedly argued the shooting was motivated by a jealous fit of rage.

In 1993, Fitch was acquitted of shooting and killing another friend while they rode in a truck, the Times reported.
