Hercules Man Arrested in Connection to Hit-And-Run

Police have arrested a 62-year-old man suspected of fleeing after hitting an elderly pedestrian with his SUV in Hercules last month.

Abraham Adams, of Hercules, was arrested Monday in connection with the Jan. 17 hit-and-run collision, which left a 70-year-old man seriously injured, police said.

The collision happened around 6:20 a.m. in the 1300 block of Willow Avenue near Interstate Highway 80, according to police.

Police said a driver of an SUV, later identified as Adams, hit the elderly man and knocked him to the ground. The driver exited the car and, after seeing that the victim was breathing, fled the scene, witnesses told police.

The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for serious head injuries and has since been released.

In the days that followed, police attempted to locate the driver using surveillance images captured by cameras on a passing bus and at a nearby Shell gas station at San Pablo and Sycamore avenues.

Police said an off-duty Hercules police officer on Monday spotted an SUV matching the description of the hit-and-run car and recorded the license plate number.

An officer who had investigated the case went to the home of the car's registered owner and immediately recognized the SUV and the driver from surveillance video, according to police.

Adams was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and was taken to county jail in Martinez. He was later released on $50,000 bail.
