Backyard Pig Slaughter Leads to Felony Animal Cruelty Arrest in Fair Oaks (VIDEO)

Fair Oaks residents heard "horrendous screaming and squealing" coming from a nearby backyard. What they found was a pig being slaughtered, initially with a hammer-blow to the head.

When several Fair Oaks residents began hearing "horrendous screaming and squealing" coming from a nearby backyard, they took a closer look to see what was happening.

What they found was a large hog being slaughtered, initially with a hammer-blow to the head that failed to kill the animal, according to the Sacramento Sheriff's Department.

"If you've got a problem, call the *** cops," said the neighbors doing the slaughtering, as you can hear in the News10 report above.

That's precisely what the neighbors did.

"It looks like at first he tried to bludgeon it with some kind of blunt force," said Jason Ramos of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department to News10. "When that was unsuccessful, he took some type of weapon and slit the pig's throat."

News10 also reports that Christopher Roppelt, 31, was arrested and charged with felony cruelty to animals.

Every single day, fruits and vegetables are violently severed from their natural habitat, away from their fellow brothers and sisters growing side by side. Then the severed parts are viciously prepared and consumed without any regard or compassion, only to satisfy selfish wants. Who speaks for the plants? This world is so full of violence against plants, Ohhhh the humanity!

I agree, should have just had the piggy taken to a slaughterhouse, where he could have just picked up his cuts and put them in the freezer. Now he's in deep doo with a felony on his record.

It is murder, and not o.k. Humans don't need to kill animals for food, as we can live vegan/vegetarian lives. For anyone to compare eating vegetables to eating red blooded animals is in huge denial. I am vegan, and healthy, but most of all I live my morals living a cruel free and compassionate life/diet. With respect for all living beings and their right to life and not to be harmed is the only right way to go. Man kind has gone crazy in thier madness when they overlook and ignore the horrible violence against innocent animals. Just put yourself in their position...how would you feel? Nothing can justify the madness of man's selfishness, greed, gluttony, & violence against animals.

Patch user "Carrot carnivore" posted the following comment. We had to remove a few words from the otherwise thoughtful comment. Please keep the language clean, people. Here's the bulk of the comment: "Anyone who argues that vegetables and animals share the same experience before they end up on your plate is ... ignorant ... Animals, obviously, feel pain and fear just like humans do (who are also animals). A carrot, obviously, does not. I guess on carrot factory farms, they also rip out their carrot testicles without anesthesia and cut off their carrot tails while they kick and scream with their little carrot legs and little carrot lungs. I guess when mother carrots being kept in carrot gestation crates develop open sores the size of a human fist and have their carrot uteruses prolapse and fall out of their carrot vaginas, they also go cruelly untreated as sows do. I guess when factory farmed carrots are shot in the head with a bolt gun and strung up by their hind leg to have their throat slit open while they're still conscious and starting kicking and thrashing violently, that's just the same as when it happens to pigs. I guess the next time your neighbors hear carrot screams coming from your backyard they better call the cops ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THIODWTqx5E&feature=youtube_gdata_player"

I agree with Robert and Racerx. Times have changed, animals are understood better, and killing by gun has taken the place of stringing up pigs and cutting their throats so they bleed to death on family farms. However, Fair Oaks is no place to kill a pig. It is not the countryside anymore.
