There is a disturbing trend on the Patch . It seems that posters, under assumed names, feel free to spew vile racist remarks at our elected officials and their families. Racism is a cancer and we need to stamp it out wherever and whenever we encounter it, in our community, our schools and the workplace.
Hercules has always prided itself on its diversity. We are a community of many different cultures and races living in harmony together. Posts like the one from this weekend, which in part read: "Keep up the 3rd world Filipino politics and you will eventually be caught, prosecuted and deported! This is the LAW of the United States of America… Not the rule of land by Myrna and Manny MARCOS!"
This is over the line and racist we need to stand up as a community and stamp out this wildfire before it consumes us. I know that this political season is filled with rancor and animosity on both sides but racism is a card that no one wins with.
I am glad that the Patch, as a policy, pulled this vile rant, but damage is still done to those that read the post and to those that were the subject of the post. I don't think for one minute that this racism is prevalent or pervasive in Hercules but even a small cancer can spread. All candidates for office need to pledge that racism has no place in this election and demand, of their supporters, that they do the same.
