-By Hercules Mayor Dan Romero
At this time last year we were just days before the Recall Election. I want to thank the residents of Hercules for believing that change was needed. Residents have asked me if I have any regrets which I have none. I feel privileged and honored to have been part of this process. The last seven years of crusading for changes has brought me to this time in Hercules history.
The pitfalls of past Hercules leadership created massive deficits and brought the City to the brink of bankruptcy. We have taken many actions to correct these past mistakes. This council has finally signed a deal to begin the ITC/Bayfront project that was delayed for seven years. We have signed a deal to complete the White Monster, Sycamore North, which will finally put an end to the nightmare that could have bankrupted our city. We have negotiated a deal with AMBAC to pay off a bond payment. But with over $12 million of debts, we still need to sell three parcels of property to settle with current creditors who have patiently waited for their payments.
The election on June 5, 2012 is crucial to the future of Hercules. Passing Measure O and N are necessary to the future of Hercules. Measure N must pass in order for our city to negotiate selling Hercules Municipal Utility, a city-owned company that is currently losing $700, 000 per year. Measure O will bring in an additional $500,000 of revenues per year over the next five years while the council looks for new businesses to come into our town.
Vote yes on Measures O and N on June 5th.
