The recall was a success. Don Kuehne and Joanne Ward were recalled, Ed Balico ran out before he could be dragged out. We were successful in removing the old régime, but we seemed not to take too seriously our obligation to provide a replacement government. We had dug a hole, but took no responsibility for properly refilling it.

After sufficient signatures had been collected, most of the recallers moved on to other things. By removing the Balico Council, we were creating a vacuum. We had a responsibility to take care in providing good candidates for the next council, the need for which had been created by our recall. We should have made an immediate transition, from a committee to recall the old, to a committee to elect the new. We should have vetted the new candidates, and we did not. That is why Gérard, Dan and Bill are on the council now. They nominated themselves. And then, the recallers, who had been lead by these three in the recall, swung in behind them and supported their candidacies for the council. It was for no better reason than that they had been on the recall leadership team. We knew how good Dan had been in helping to run the recall movement; we had no reason to assume that he would be good on the council.
November 6 will provide an opportunity for the recallers to redeem themselves. We have an obligation to the community, an obligation to repair the damage done by the recall. We have an obligation, this time, to support the right candidates.
