A Woman among Warlords

Afghan activist Malalai Joya presents, “A Woman among Warlords,”  7p.m. Thur., Oct. 17 in BCC’s auditorium

Malalai
Joya speaks at 7 p.m., Thur., Oct. 17, in BCC’s auditorium, 2050 Center
St., Berkeley  on "A Woman Among Warlords:  The Extraordinary Story of
an Afghan who Dared to Raise Her Voice."  The event is free and open to
the public.  Joya first gained international attention in 2003 when she
spoke out publicly against the domination of warlords in Afghanistan. In
2005 she became one of 68 women elected to Afghanistan’s 249-seat
National Assembly.  She was a teacher in secret girls' schools, hiding
her books under her burqa.  Joya also helped establish a free medical
clinic and orphanage in Farah. In 2010, Time Magazine placed Malalai
Joya on their annual list of the 100 most influential people in the
world. For  details contact Joan Berezin at jberezin@peralta.edu (510) 981-2884.
