Pinole Man Named to County Veterans Post

Marine war vet and counselor is appointed.

The following is the text from a press release isssued by Contra Costa County Supervisor Federal Glover's office.

Pinole resident Nathan Johnson has been appointed to the position of Veterans Service Officer for Contra Costa County, effective Feb. 27. Johnson comes to Contra Costa from the Concord Vet Center, where he has served as a readjustment counselor since 2004

“Who better to know the needs of veterans than someone who has, literally, been through the wars himself,” said Contra Costa Supervisor Federal Glover.

County Administrator David Twa selected Johnson after an extensive recruitment, noting his expertise in the needs of veterans and benefits available to them. “Nathan has been on both sides of the equation, honorably serving our country in Iraq and providing counseling to returning veterans from Iraq, Afghanistan and other conflicts,” Twa noted.

Johnson received the 2011 Veteran of the Year award for Assembly District 11, and the 2008 Dedicated Service Award from the Vietnam Vets of Diablo Valley. He graduated from California State University, Stanislaus, and received a Masters in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley.

He replaces longtime Veterans Service Officer Phil Munley, who recently took a position with the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs to be closer to his extended family.

Contra Costa County’s Veterans Service Office provides assistance to residents who have served in the Armed Forces, as well as their dependents and survivors. Local offices are vital in connecting veterans with federal and state programs and benefits.
