Firefighters Collecting Donations to Fight Muscular Dystrophy

Volunteers will be at several locations during the week.

Firefighters representing a Contra Costa fire department labor union joined with volunteers to collect donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the Pinole Valley Shopping Center Monday.

The annual Fill the Boot event raised $61,000 last year, said Nick Ronchetto, vice president of union Local 1230, which represents firefighters in several West Contra Costa County departments, including Pinole and the Rodeo-Hercules Fire Protection District. That amount raised by the United Professional Firefighters of Contra Costa County ranked fourth in California in 2010, Ronchetto said.

Firefighters and volunteers will be scattered at several locations this week, including the El Cerrito Plaza shopping center on Wednesday, Ronchetto said.
