5 Things: Garage Sales, Emergency Preparedness, Cowboy Bob, City Meetings

If you’ve been sucked into obsessive texting or emailing habits along with much of the rest of the world, you’ve probably seen this :-) symbol about a million times, and this one, too  :-( but hopefully not as often. It was this week, 19 years ago, when Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist Scott Fahlman first proposed using the symbols digitally.

1) is finally getting new digs. The thirty-something school facilities will be demolished and then rebuilt to better accommodate Herculees’ bright young minds. Community members and West Contra Costa Unified School District reps will gather at Ohlone on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m for a teardown .

2) There are a couple of government meetings this week. The Hercules Bayfront is on the agenda for Monday night’s Planning Commission meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. in the Hercules City Hall Council Chambers. And the Finance Sub-Committee and Citizens Finance Advisory Ad Hoc Committee are scheduled to meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers.

3) If you’re just looking for a local way to spend a day with the kids this week, will sing campfire songs for children at the on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The event, like just about all library happenings, is free.

4) Be prepared for an emergency or even a disaster situation? If not, or if you want to brush up on your skills, the Rodeo Hercules Fire District is hosting Community Emergency Response Training Team classes for the public beginning September 22.  The sessions are from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays for eight consecutive weeks—free of charge. 5) Now’s the time to gather your household clutter and ready yourself for the . The event officially starts on Saturday at 8 a.m., but participants can set up the timing of their sales as they wish.
