The Great Escape: Face It!

Disappear for an afternoon salon facial and come out better for it.

Sometimes the smartest ideas are right in your face.

If you are running on fumes and can’t muster enough energy to do anything active, the answer may be a deep-cleansing facial. A salon facial provides some time to yourself, even if it is just an hour in a dark room, so getting a facial may be the way to go. Your skin will thank you for it.

A facial treatment at a salon is more than just a mud mask while your hair is up in some fancy towels. The most basic treatments often include a hand, neck and shoulder massage and deep moisturizing hand treatments as well. Cleansing is followed by extractions, which clean out your pores, and soothing moisturizers calm down your skin. It really is a complete escape where you quite literally cannot answer your cell phone even if you want to.

A good esthetician will analyze your skin and ask you a series of questions about your health in order to get you the very best treatment.

There are specialized facials for all kinds of skin types: sensitive, acne-prone, or those who are seeking anti-aging therapy.

In most cases, this will not cost a fortune. In our area of Contra Costa, a good facial treatment will start at about $75 for the basic service. Waxing, extra exfoliating masks and other services will add to the cost. But in smaller cities in the suburbs, prices are much lower than large cities.

And toss the guilt. Think of deep-cleansing treatments as the French do: a necessary part of one’s beauty regimen.

Pinole and Hercules alone have more than 40 salons from which to choose. Martinez has many salons and day spas, too. Ask your friends for recommendations, particularly if you have sensitive skin or are new to professional skin treatments.

Cindy Fletcher at Body Beautiful gives the best facials I've ever had. She is thorough, gentle and includes lovely touches, such as arm and hand massages. Kathleen Cortlund
